    Amazon.com Product Description
Proving once again that good things come in small packages, the JVC FS-Y1 audio/video system comes loaded with valuable features for the discerning music and movie fan. The system includes a pair of full-range speakers (18 watts x 2) with 3.19-inch cone drivers, giving listeners the means to enjoy high-quality stereo sound when playing CDs, CD-R/RWs, MP3s, and WMA files. At the same time, it also displays crisp DVD video--with DVD, DVD-R and DVD-RW, VCD, SVCD, and JPEG compatibility--making it a nice system for the living room, bedroom, and anywhere else you want to watch movies. It even converts Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks into two-channel audio playback so listeners can enjoy high-end movie soundtracks (along with DVD-Audio discs) through the stereo speakers. The end result is immersive audio and video that almost, but not quite, re-creates the surround-sound theater experience (a process abetted by the 3D Phonic circuitry).

Users will enjoy a superior DVD picture thanks to the progressive scan output, which displays twice the scan lines of an interlaced DVD player. Other DVD features include multi-angle playback, zoom, slow motion, and random and repeat play. The system also comes with an AM/FM tuner (with 30 FM and 15 AM presets), a sleep timer, and an alarm with three presets. To further its usefulness as an alarm, the FS-Y1 boasts a "wakeup volume" function, a handy add-on for slow risers that gradually increases the alarm volume as you open your eyes. Meanwhile, signal transfer is coordinated by the 10-bit/54 MHz video DAC and 192 kHz/24-bit audio DAC.

The FS-Y1 connects to a TV through the component video output (for the best possible picture), though it also includes S-video and composite outputs as alternatives. Plus, it comes with an optical digital output that lets you connect the DVD player to a 5.1-channel receiver to enjoy genuine surround sound.

    What's in the Box
FS-Y1 CD/DVD player, two speakers, remote control, user's manual.

    1 out of 5 stars dead after a year   July 29, 2010

Another bookshelf system that stopped playing most discs after a year of use. Crap. Save your money unless you like buying a new micro system every 9 - 12 months.

5 out of 5 stars JVC FS-Y1 Micro DVD/ CD Componenet System   March 1, 2008
    Charles F. Wells (Lansing, MI)
I've been an Audiophile for 30yrs of My 45yr Life. I've seen the big Audio Speakers phase out to small compact and/ or In-walls. Went through the FM Stereo to 8-Track to Cassette to CD to MP3 craze and still have most of My Collection. I've always felt Bigger was Better and the more Speakers the Truer the sound when it came to Ultimate Sound Quality. Yes...I still have My Polk Audio SDA SRS', Definitive Tech BP3000's and even My Klipsch Horns but I was knocked off My Chair when My Girlfriend bought Me the JVC FS-Y1 Component A/V System for My Den. (Look...when You speakers are taller then Your Girlfriend...) So I took the System out of the box with the Warden looking over My shoulders, read the Manual (real Men don't read Manuals but the Warden was still looking over My shoulder) and hook the System up placing the small Cube Speakers in the corners. Then I noticed... there's a Subwoofer Output; what the Hell...OK, I'll bite so I hooked up My Jamo D-4, Dual 8" Subwoofer just for laughs. I'll be honest...the Remote was Impressive, the Speakers are nice looking and the System has Video Component Outputs, a Clock, CD/DVD and AM/FM Stereo Tuner with Presets all in a little System no bigger then a Bread Box! So I place My "Old School" Bass CD in the Tray, sit back in My Recliner, prop My feet up and get ready to chuckle. I couldn't believe the sound the came out of the small Cubes; Clean, Clear and full of Body but where was the Bass?? Oh...there's a Function on the Remote that turns the Subwoofer Output on and off. Whatever!! And with the Warden still looking over my shoulder I... WOW, I almost fell out of My Chair when the Subwoofer started dancing. How could a little System this small have such a great Subwoofer Output? So I went one better, I hooked the Video up to My 42" Flat Screen just to see how good the DVD would look and sound. Again I was almost knocked out of My Chair when I saw the quality of the Picture with the thick sound that was coming out of just 2- Speakers and a Sbbwoofer...I was sold!! It's not My McIntosh, Carver or even Nakamichi Equipment but boy does it look and sound great. So with permission from the Warden, I'm writing this review to let all You Old School Audiophiles know that bigger isn't always better!! This little System kicks serious Butt.

3 out of 5 stars Newer is not always better   September 17, 2007

The new JVC FS-Y1 replaces their old FS-1000 that served me extremely well for some 8 years. When the 1000 suddenly stopped working, I ordered the new FS-Y1, since it is about the same size and fits in the space available. However, by making the Y1 interface with video components, JVC overcomplicated a user-friendly remote with lots of unwelcome buttons. Anytime the buttons for the main function of a radio are hidden behind a sliding plate on the remote, designers have lost sight of the customer's priorities--not to mention the customer losing sight of the buttons. In short, the beautiful simplicity of the 1000 gives way to the annoying complications of a hybrid machine that probably would not be the choice of anyone who needs a tuner for video.

I am SO happy with this vendor and the product. I ordered it and requested standard delivery. I received it the next day by 11:00 am!

I love the compactness, versatility of the product. Though I'll only use it as a radio/CD player, it also has the capability of playing DVDs ... incredible. So many functions in such a compact product.

The JVC quality is evident in its construction and sound quality. Very nice, I recommend it!
