Product Description
As part of the second generation of Onkyo high-definition-capable receivers, the TX-SR606 is at the forefront of affordable home theater. The key is to have the most capable version of HDMI. The TX-SR606 provides high-definition video and audio processing for four source components - another first for Onkyo at this level. From Blu-ray Disc players to gaming consoles and cable/satellite boxes, you have everything in the digital realm covered. Apart from 1080p video, the TX-SR606 can upscale all video signals to 1080i, regardless of the connection, for output via HDMI. Onkyo's own RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) also gives you inter-operability with the displays and playback components from other leading brands. The TX-SR606 maintains the fullness of surround sound audio quality at low volume levels. The TX-SR606 offers all-round excellence rarely seen at this level.

1 out of 5 stars Died after 14 Months   March 7, 2010
Grr...Arrgh
I purchased this unit from Amazon on Jan 19th, 2009. It worked great until today, when it died while switching between inputs. Based on the troubleshooting procedures, the amp protection circuit was activated, and not even resetting back to factory defaults brought the receiver back. 14 months is not an acceptable product life.

We moved in August 2009, and since then I haven't hooked the speakers back up (our new house has a different layout) so for the time being, this was basically just functioning as an input switch. I can't believe that it could have a hardware failure when it's not even being taxed.

For the record, this was in a cabinet with ample ventilation and airflow, and the unit was kept free of dust. The receiver and all connected devices are on surge suppressors. The ambient temperature in the room is always between 68 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit, and I live in Tucson, so humidity is not an issue. Basically, I don't think the environment could have contributed to the problem, and I can't think of anything more that I could have done to prevent this problem.

Based on the online warranty information, I'm supposed to send the receiver back at my own expense to the nearest authorized service center, *in the original box*. We've moved since I purchased this unit, so of course, I no longer have the original box. Looking at the reviews, it seems that even if the unit gets repaired, I may very well have to send it in again.

I'm not happy with the reliability of this unit, and I would not consider purchasing this brand again.

1 out of 5 stars HDMI board failed within one year, TWICE!   March 5, 2010
Nelson Alonso
This Onkyo reciever is a great value for the money, but at the end you get what you pay for. The unit worked flawlesly for one year, then the HDMI signal started to cut and flicker in and out during movies from all sources via HDMI. Took the unit to my local dealer, and it turns out this is a very common failure of the unit. They had it in the shop for a month since the HDMI board was on back order due to so many failures. After a month patiently waiting without surround system, I got my unit back. It worked perfectly for 2 weeks, and then the flickering and cutting in and out started once again. What is worse, the OSD menu dissappeard and the menus could only be viewed from unit's LCD. I took it back to my Onkyo dealer, and it was the HDMI board, AGAIN! So here I am, another month with no surround until the dealer gets the HDMI board, which, you guessed it! is still on back order! I am lucky all of this has happened while I am stil under warranty (unit comes with a 2 yr) but judging by the failure rate, this will likely happen again once the unit is out of warranty. The board repair is $375, which is more than the unit retails for. My advice to you, skip the Onkyo and get the Sony STR-DH800 only $275 on Amazon with free shipping. Costs less, they use better parts and has ALL the features the 606 has. I asked the repair tech and they hardly see any Sony's or Pioneers. That is what I am doing once the 606 fails after the warrany expires.

2 out of 5 stars good sound quality, poor reliability   March 2, 2010
Christoph Ohngemach (Hillsborough, NJ)
I bought this unit about a year and a half ago and used it to hook up my cable box, TV and DVD player. Speakers are Onkyo as well (5.1 setup). Sound quality is excellent and setup was easy.

Now to the bad. Soon after purchase the unit would shut down about 5 minutes into watching TV or a movie. Kind of a pain, but not that big of a deal because it would turn back on without a problem. I know that overheating can be a problem, that's why I kept the unit out in the open, making sure that there is plenty of air circulation around it. Last week it did the same thing, but now I am unable to turn it back on again. Onkyo customer service has not been very helpful so far, recommends to bring it to a service center. I may be a little naive, but for the price we pay for these kind of units, they should last for at least a decade.

2 out of 5 stars Dead HDMI after one year, no support   February 26, 2010
P. Fletcher (DC)
I purchased this in Dec 2008, and after a year, I started noticing slow down when switching from HDMI device to device. In December 2009, I lost the ability to view 1080p on my Playstation 3, I switched to 1080i and I was ok with it. In February, it wouldn't show up on my Samsung TV in any resolution. I had to hook my PS3 directly to the TV to watch or use my PS3. In January, I lost the same ability to view 1080p on my Apple TV. Again, switched to 1080i and to this day, it seems to be ok. My HD DVR Cable box is fine, but it only works in 1080i. I've lost the ability to do TV OnScreen Setup, and I've lost the ability to use my Wii on component cables or composite cables. I tried the reset buttons (VCR+while Powering the device on) and that at least fixed the set volume at 63, but it didn't fix anything else. I've emailed Onyko, but no reply. I would not recommend Onyko for these issues. The speakers aren't bad, but with no support, and an unstable receiver, I can't recommend them.

Fletch.

1 out of 5 stars Has Known Issues - Research Before You Buy!   February 6, 2010
jodha (New Mexico)
Onkyo in general seems to have a good reputation when it comes to receivers. So I bought this receiver and was initially happy with the performance. I had 3 devices connected to it via HDMI. Then one morning, I turned on the tv to watch, and no picture. If I'd wait 30 minutes, the picture would finally come in. Then one day, no picture from the PS3 or Blu-ray player. Today, I haven't been able to resolve why there is no picture. Have tried to contact ONKYO, but no response. I researched this issue via the internet, and what do you know, numerous folks have already posted this on various sites asking for help. I've tried all the ideas I've read, but to no avail.

So, bottom line, do better research than I did. If you're using for 1080p components, then do some Googling before buying.
