| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description As part of the second generation of Onkyo high-definition-capable receivers, the TX-SR606 is at the forefront of affordable home theater. The key is to have the most capable version of HDMI. The TX-SR606 provides high-definition video and audio processing for four source components-another first for Onkyo at this level. From Blu-ray Disc players to gaming consoles and cable/satellite boxes, you have everything in the digital realm covered. Apart from 1080p video, the TX-SR606 can upscale all video signals to 1080i, regardless of the connection, for output via HDMI. Onkyo`s own RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) also gives you inter-operability with the displays and playback components from other leading brands. And with an expanded version of Audyssey`s room correction technology, the TX-SR606 maintains the fullness of surround sound audio quality at low volume levels. The TX-SR606 offers all-round excellence rarely seen at this level.

hdmi switching August 30, 2010 Jack Putnam As per 95% of all the one star reviews here. My receiver started having issues with HDMI switching after about 20 months. I am bringing it in for warranty work today. My major concern is will this happen a year from now again with the same issue after the repair. When this unit was working it was fantastic, but i would advise not buying an Onkyo receiver until these issues are acknowledged and fixed by Onkyo.
HDMI problems August 20, 2010 C. T. Wallace (Davis, CA United States) Do not purchase this item unless you want to play russian roulette with the HDMI board. Thankfully, my HDMI board died with 3 months left on the warranty. Just Google the model and HDMI if you don't believe me.
Defective, it will die after aproximately 1 year of use. August 16, 2010 James (Baltimore, MD) I, like many others it seems, have experienced the HDMI connections slowly die over the course of the last few months. Now none of the HDMI connections work and my box is being repaired. Luckily it was still covered by the 2 year warranty, but I am very upset that I will be without a receiver for the the next month or two, maybe longer if the horror stories that other reviewers have written about is any indication. I was very happy with the receiver for the first 9 months of operation, but I must give this receiver one star because of the huge inconvenience this has caused me. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy this unit. For more information about the defect see this AVS thread: [...]
*UPDATE 8/28/2010* The repair was fast and effective, upgraded my rating from 1 to 2 stars. They replaced the capacitors not the entire HDMI board - I hope the repair lasts. I will update if I have any further issues with the receiver.
This Model Under Investigation - Faulty HDMI Board **UPDATED** August 13, 2010 Cyclone 429 (Vancouver, BC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
**UPDATE** I have now upgraded my rating from 1 to 3 stars as my unit was just successfully repaired under warranty. As much as I like this receiver itself, I cannot rate any higher as Onkyo has just done the minimum here. Here are some considerations:
What if the repair doesn't last?
Mine happened to die two days before the warranty ended. What if died two days after the warranty? Different story.
This should have been treated as a recall - a bulletin issued to us customers before the warranty expired. Looking back at these reveiws - it has been a well known issue for 2 years now! Such a courtesy would have paid Onkyo big dividends in customer loyalty going forward.
These companies tend to underestimate the huge inconvenience placed on the customer. Unhook everything, pack up, transport, entire household lives without for days - if not weeks, pickup, unpack, re-hook everything up (no small task! Some even have to hire someone to do this for them).
Original Review:
Like almost all other recent reviewers here - my HDMI Board also failed...just days before the warranty expired! If you have this model and have noticed your picture not passing through/no onscreen display - or any other HDMI weirdness - get it serviced under warranty because it will die! Remember - this is a two year warranty.
The phone support guy at Onkyo told me this problem is "under investigation". He had me try a system reset - but to no avail. So I just dropped it off at an authorized service depot yesterday - I will update you on my repair.
It appears some reveiwers actually had their unit replaced by Onkyo with a newer model - so we shall see what happens. If a good, successful, longterm repair solution takes place in a timely fashion - or I receive a replacement - I will happily be upgrading this review accordingly.
Other than that - this unit was easy to use and sounded great...it received rave magazine reviews when it was new. I did not experience the heat issues as some apparently have.
Problems after 15 months July 19, 2010 Paul P. Mayne (Salt lake City, UT) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It worked great for the first year, then the TV no longer recognized the input until I switched it on and off 2-3 times. Through trial and error I determined the receiver to be the issue.
